AAV: What do you think will fuel this growth? Is it a growing aware-
ness and appreciation of the role business aviation can play for com-
panies/organisations, governments, Ultra/High Net Worth Individuals
(U/HNWIs), etc., in wealth creation?
GD: The Asia business aviation market is comparatively new
compared to North America and Europe and therefore by default
the opportunity and growth potential is greater as the market is
less saturated. Customers are becoming more educated and their
sophistication level is increasing and as their knowledge base
increases so do their demands. They know very well the level of
service they want and should receive with the amount of money
they have paid. As the pursuit of luxurious enjoyment by the
Ultra-High-Net-Worth individuals continues to climb more and
varied service products have been launched by various providers
to further extend the business aviation service levels thus in a
way stimulating the growth and improvement of the industry and
shaping the maturity and customers' understanding of the use of
There is no doubt that business aircraft in Asia are considered a
valued asset and a required tool to enhance business opportunities.
Time is money to our owners and as the airspace opens up and in-
frastructure develops (especially in China we will see an increase
in business aircraft usage on all fronts.
AAV: Metrojet's portfolio of services consists of aircraft charter, air-
craft management and aircraft maintenance. Looking ahead, do you
think your company will end up devoting more time and resources
to perhaps one of these key service areas only?
GD: We will focus on what we do well and endeavour to continu-
ously improve our level of service on our current business portfolio
of aircraft management charter and MRO services. We have a
fourth pillar of auxiliary services including continuing airworthiness
management organisation (CAMO and other a la carte offerings to
both our established fleet and other third-party clients as a way for
them to familiarise themselves with our company prior to jumping
into full-service contracts. Metrojet's ability to provide comprehen-
sive service packages and the one-stop shop to our customers is
a benefit that we can offer our current and future customer base.
AAV: As a major Hong Kong-based business jet operator, what are
some of the current issues a ecting Metrojet's operations at Hong
Kong International Airport (HKIA)? Is it a lack of dedicated apron
parking space; a lack of landing/take-o slots at the airport, a lack
of dedicated FBO/MRO facilities, etc.? What do you think could be
done to solve these issues going forward?
GD: The lack of parking space and take-o /landing slots at the
Hong Kong International Airport is impacting all of the operators
in the region as well as globally. The Asian Business Aviation As-
sociation (AsBAA is assisting all the industry players in sharing
and expressing our thoughts views and recommendations to the
relevant authorities in an attempt to find a solution. As an alternative
and temporary resolution to the current parking situation Metrojet is
able to o er our customers our Clark facility based in the Philippines
or to be operated at airports near Hong Kong. However in the long
term an alternate solution must be found. The ability to perform
large maintenance projects is also hindered by the cost of doing
business at the airport and the access to a ordable hangar space.
Our Clark facility provides us with an alternative location for heavy
maintenance and the possibility for future a ordable expansion. I
believe that communication at all levels is necessary for the resolu-
tion of any issue and that Metrojet has very good relationships with
HKBAC the relevant airport authorities regulators and partners. I
am confident that with the assistance of industry voices such as
AsBAA we are able to table our concerns. The next step is to find
positive resolution and this is a work in progress.
AAV: As a major Asia-based business jet operator, what are some
of the current issues a ecting Metrojet's operations in the region?
What do you think could be done to solve these issues going forward?
GD: Infrastructure airspace and readily available trained educat-
ed and a ordable labour are issues that all operators are facing to
varying degrees dependent upon the specific region. We need to
develop more local talent at all positions be it technical or senior
management level. Pilot availability is cyclical and it appears that
the recent growth in the commercial aircraft business may result in a
shortage of business aircraft pilots. The development of new aircraft
platforms adds an additional strain on resources and training costs
on both the pilot and maintenance side of the business.
As China opens up its airspace there will be a need for ad-
ditional infrastructure including airports navigational aids and
maintenance and FBO facilities. With each new airport new rela-
tionships with onsite service providers will need to be fostered and
partnership agreements be put in place. The level of service will
vary at each site requiring additional resources to manage these
new relationships in order to ensure the safe and efficient handling
of our customers' aircraft.
AAV: Do you feel positive about the industry's future in Hong Kong
and across Asia?
GD: Hong Kong China and the rest of the Asia region all provide
their own specific and relevant opportunities and issues that require
focused attention. This being said most are manageable to some
degree. Those beyond our control (e.g. China airspace need to be
identified and dealt with by working together with our competi-
tion partners AsBAA our customers and the various government
regulators and authorities. Hong Kong will continue to be a very
challenging environment and business aviation growth will be
di icult albeit not impossible. Airspace access and infrastructure
development remains a challenge in some regions in Asia. However
one just needs to look at Seletar Airport in Singapore to see a model
of business aviation e iciency and success through government and
industry partnership and collaboration.
