Korea may be more famous for its IT and
automobile industries, but its aerospace
industry is climbing up the ladder. Korea's
aerospace industry is becoming an
important supplier to the likes of Airbus and Boeing.
For instance, Korean Air Aerospace Division (KAL-
ASD), the aerospace arm of the flag carrier, is the
exclusive supplier of the fuel-saving sharklet wingtip
for the Airbus A320 that is due for EIS later this year.
KAL-ASD has been working with Airbus for over
twenty years. "The company was selected based on
its expertise and its proven track record in supplying
quality products at competitive cost and on time,"
says the European manufacturer.
Airbus is planning production rate for the A320
Family of 42 aircraft a month from the end of this year.
The manufacturer expects that 50 per cent of A320
Family deliveries in 2013 will be fitted with Sharklets,
which would mean around 250 pairs of sharklets
next year. By 2014 most A320 Family aircraft will
be fitted with the devices, which will be standard on
KAL-ASD is also involved in a wide range of
programmes for various Airbus aircraft, including
elevator sections for the A320 Family, fuselage skin
panels and floor assemblies for the A330 Family, and
the cargo doors for the new A350 XWB.
KAL-ASD is also a long-standing partner of
Boeing on aircraft including the 747, 777, 717 and
the 787, where its contribution included raked wing
tips, aft fuselage, aft wheel well bulkhead, flap
support fairings, stringers and nose wheel well.
The Korean supplier is also involved in the new
747-8 programme - parent Korean Air was the first
carrier in the world to order both the freighter and
Korean Aerospace Industries (KAI), meanwhile,
is a partner on various Boeing programmes - it
supplies 737 horizontal and vertical assemblies and
will also supply 787-9 composite wing ribs. KAI is
also a supplier to Airbus, providing wing parts.
Korean Air has expressed interest in taking a 42%
stake in KAI, which is mainly focussed on military
aircraft. However, analysts have questioned whether
the carrier has the financial appetite for the purchase,
which would cost close to US$1 billion.
The southern part of South Korea is the home turf
of the country's aerospace industry, with the Korean
Aerospace Valley in Gyeongnam hosting around
two-thirds of the country's aerospace companies
and employees. The aim is to have 200 companies
with turnover of KRW 10 billion (US$8.9 million)by
2020, including ten with KRW 100 billion. We list
some of the key companies in the valley below.
